1v1 finishing

In his game

The gap

One-on-one with only the keeper — no defender between them, no one pressing — and the shot still goes straight at him. The read is that he hurries it: he rushes the moment instead of taking the half-second to pick his spot, and the keeper holds what should be a goal. He knows it — I’ve told him plenty of times and he agrees — but on the pitch the same pattern comes back. For a striker, burying the 1v1 is non-negotiable; the chance is there, the calm finish isn’t, not yet.

The plan

How we’re approaching it

The one thing that would unlock it: slow down in the 1v1. There’s time he isn’t using — take the extra beat, let the keeper commit first, then side-foot it past him instead of straight at him. Placement over power, the corner picked early, the body opened one way to send the keeper the other. Finishing reps against a keeper from real chances, so the calm decision is made before he shoots, not as he shoots.

  • Slow down in the 1v1 — take the extra beat, don’t rush the shot
  • Let the keeper commit first, then side-foot it past him, not at him
  • Pick a corner early — placement over power
  • Open the body one way, finish the other — send the keeper the wrong way
  • Finishing reps against a keeper, from the clear chances he keeps getting
